Fissures are the pits and grooves that naturally occur on the chewing surfaces of molar teeth.
They are high risk areas for decay in newly erupted teeth. If the fissures are very deep and narrow, even excellent brushing can allow food particles and bacteria to remain behind. Sooner or later, depending on diet, this could mean decay and fillings.
Fissure sealants are thin coatings that seal the grooves and protect teeth from dental plaque and acids. This treatment is painless and non-invasive and is especially effective in childrens’ teeth to prevent decay from ever beginning. Apart from close examination, we diagnose the fissures with a Diagnodent laser fluorescence technique (completely painless) if in doubt.
